Canopic jars were used by the ancient Egyptians during the mummification process. It was very important to ancient Egyptian religious beliefs that the human body was preserved after death. The mummification process was developed to preserve the body as much as possible. During the process all of the major organs were removed and placed in canopic jars that were usually carved from limestone or made of pottery.
