Known for
his meticulous research into the social history of African
Americans, Jacob Lawrence (1917–2000) was born in Atlantic City, New
Jersey, but he spent most of his childhood in Harlem. As a teenager
he enrolled in the Harlem Art Workshop, where he met James Lesesne
Wells, the director of the program, and Charles Alston, who
nourished Lawrence's interest in art.
He joined
the Artists Union and the Harlem Artists, associations that inspired
his selection of the history and social composition of African
Americans as the subject matter of his art.
