Joseph Holston:
Color in Freedom
greeting cards
$14.95
 |
Joseph
Holston - Color in Freedom boxed greeting cards
Holston
(American, b. 1944) traveled the route of the Underground
Railroad—the clandestine network of abolitionists who helped
fugitive slaves escape to the North—in preparation for creating this
dynamic pictorial narrative organized, like a symphony, in four
movements. The dramatic images in this series contrast the brutality
of slavery with the courage and strength of those who survived it,
escaped it, and worked to end it.

H. Johnson - boxed greeting cards
Born in South
Carolina to a poor family, William H. Johnson (1901–1970) moved to
New York at age seventeen and worked his way through the prestigious
National Academy of Design, winning numerous awards and the respect
of his teachers and fellow students. He spent the late 1920s and
most of the 1930s in Europe, absorbing the lessons of modernism and
developing an interest in primitivism and folk art. Returning to the
United States in 1938, he immersed himself in painting scenes of
African American tradition with stunning and eloquent simplicity.

Amos
Ferguson - boxed greeting cards
Bahamian artist
Amos Ferguson (b. 1920) didn’t begin to paint seriously until he was
in his forties. A deeply religious man, Ferguson initially did not
sell his paintings, considering them to be works to honor God rather
than articles for public consumption. But his artwork proved too
popular to remain undiscovered. Ferguson’s scenes of Bahamian life
and customs, made with ordinary house paint, soon came to the
attention of collectors and curators in the United States.
International acclaim followed after a 1985 world-traveling solo
exhibition.
