The intense,
complex, and inventive artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988)
powerfully combined words and images in his work, quickly achieving
international recognition. He began as a graffitist whose tags were
unexpected food for thought for New Yorkers. Soon the fine art world
discovered him, and before long he was using oils and acrylics on
canvas to produce art in which humor and anger, picture and poem
battle for primacy.
Because of Basquiat’s high profile—and his
friendships with Warhol and Haring—his work attracted lavish praise
and extreme disdain. Both reactions were frequently off the mark,
distorted by the artist’s superstardom. Today Basquiat’s
incomparable creations continue to intrigue with their exuberant
originality and wry social commentary.
