Twenty-four portraits of significant African American and Diaspora poets
make up the Furious Flower Portrait Quilt by Malaika Favorite. Using
mixed media collage, Favorite incorporates each poet’s work into his or
her portrait, striving for a suggestion of that poet’s character. This
calendar reproduces twelve of the quilt’s portraits—of Nikki Giovanni,
Margaret Walker, Claude McKay, and Rita Dove, among others—each
accompanied by the text of the included poetry and a brief biography of
the poet. Birthdays of notable African American poets are listed on the
calendar’s grid pages.
