In 1920, eight men
representing six colleges from the state of Texas met to discuss
collegiate athletics and the many challenges that face their
respective institutions. By the time the session in Houston had
concluded, they had founded an athletic league that went on to
become one of the leading sports associations in the world of
collegiate athletics, the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).
There are 110
historically black colleges in the United States today, including
public and private, two-year and four-year institutions, medical
schools and community colleges. The Higher Education Act of 1965, as
amended, defines an HBCU as any historically black college or
university that was established prior to 1964, whose principal
mission was, and is, the education of black Americans, and that is
accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency.
