Ernie Barnes Art Work

Ernie Barnes is one of the most popular artists in the world. His depiction of the African American experience is unique and his vivid imagination is reflected in his artwork.

Ernie was born in 1938 and began painting while playing college football at North Carolina College. He went on to play for five years in the NFL, then decided to call it quits and paint full-time. Many people recognize his painting called "Sugar Shack" from the classic TV sitcom Good Times.
Most of Ernie Barnes' artwork reflect his view of African American lifestyles but he also shows us his continued love for sports. He also has a commitment towards racial and ethnic harmony and many of his paintings reflect it. With all things considered it's easy to see why Ernie is one of the most collected artists in the world.

To Know Defeat

The Bomb: The artist's hand obeys his creative imagination to create a maximum of dramatic tension and airy lightness between a wide receiver and two defenders. They are presented here in a rhythm of sinuous contours which answer one another in body attitude and determination while floating in air to receive the ball.

The Front Four: Behind the helmeted bars of pro football's legendary lineman are the Goliaths of the defensive line. Men who wear the title of "the front four".

First Down: The "zebras" are as much a part of the game as the ball is. It's their authority and theirs alone to control on-the-field behavior.

Loose Ball: Characterized by an intense emotionalism, this is a vigorous composition unleashing the twisted figures of linemen racing towards a fumble.

To Know Defeat: Losing, after so much preparation, crushes the ego. On top of being tired, the senses are dulled by the pain of doubting your teammates as well as your capacity to perform on a high level and with consistency. Defeat is really a personal thing and in it, each man has to suffer in his own way.
