Civil Rights demonstrators risked life and
limb in order to secure
the freedoms we enjoy today.
What ever happened to that kind of courage?

Destiny
On
December 1, 1955 Rosa Parks refused to vacate her seat
so that a white
passenger could sit down. Her actions fulfilled
her destiny as she became
a catalyst for the Civil Rights Movement. Have you found your
destiny?

Determination
In August
1957 nine Black students began desegregating Central High School in Little
Rock, Arkansas. The local people taunted and terrorized the students so
severely that federal troops had to be called in to protect them. The
Little Rock Nine fought through adversity because they were determined to
accomplish their mission. Does that kind of determination exist today?

Achievement
Thurgood
Marshall was the head of the NAACP's legal defense team and he never lost
a case that he argued at the U.S. Supreme Court. His most influential
success was the Brown v. Board of Education
of Topeka, Kansas in 1954. It
was the case that ended
segregation in America's education system.
Quite
an achievement, wouldn't you say?

Unity
Black unity
peaked during the 1960's because we had a common enemy: systematic racism,
police brutality, and racially motivated mob violence. The Freedom
March on Washington, in 1963, united over 200,000 people towards a common
goal.
Our
united effort succeeded in breaking down systematic racism, we've also
reduced police brutality, and stopped the mob
violence. Now it's time to take the next step and unite
together economically and become a true force
to be reckoned with.

History
The Jim
Crow era of American history was a humiliating time for African Americans.
We were treated like 2nd class citizens and
had to endure slave-like
conditions and treatment. Those
that lived through that era, have a whole
different
perspective on Black history.

Endless
Effort
Harriet
Tubman was known as Moses because of the way she led thousands of Blacks
to freedom via the Underground Railroad. The "railroad" was a
network of safe houses and hideouts that stretched from the plantations in
the South to freedom in the North. Harriet's endless effort provided hope
for countless slaves who went on to become entrepreneurs, landowners, or
just plain free men.

Strength
The
strength of African American's during slavery can't compare with the
strength we needed after slavery. As slaves we knew where we stood and we
knew the rules. But after slavery we
had to find the strength to deal with
a society filled
with hypocrisy and broken broken promises.

Success
Booker
T. Washington was a successful man who looked at the world
through a businessman's eyes. He didn't agree with W.E.B DuBois
and the other intellectuals of his day; they wanted to fight discrimination
through the legal system and organized protest. Booker T.
believed Blacks should focus on business ownership or learn
trade and strive for economic equality. He believed if we became
economically powerful that whites would be forced to
drop the
barriers of racism and we would gain some
measure of
equality.

Imagination
George
Washington Carver created over 325 products from peanuts and over 100
products from the sweet potato; as well as hundreds more from a dozen
other plants native to the South. These products
contributed to rural economic improvement by offering alternative crops to
cotton that were beneficial to the farmers and to the land. George's
imagination gave him the ability to see beyond the ordinary. Nothing
happens unless it is first imagined.

Unsung
Heroes
After
more than fifty years, the history of the Tuskegee Airmen is still quite
obscure. The name refers to the young Black pilots who received flight
training at Tuskegee Army Air Field in Alabama during and shortly after
World War II. During the war the Tuskegee Airmen faced the contradiction
between
fighting for democracy overseas and being
denied civil rights at
home.

The
Power of Faith
No one
has struggled more for civil rights than Frederick Douglass. He was born
at a time when strong voices were desperately needed to cry out for
freedom, and he established himself as a powerful speaker for all men and
women. He had faith that one day Blacks would enjoy all the rights and
freedoms that other American's enjoyed.
