Frederick Douglass -- Freedom's Force

Background

Time-Life Education produced biographical sketches for its History Makers series, two of which were designed and developed by Redmon. This CD-ROM is about Frederick Douglass, the abolitionist and statesman. "Freedom's Force" delivers a content-rich, interactive, educational experience to middle school students.

Description

This CD-ROM title explores the life and accomplishments of a freed slave, abolitionist, and statesman. It includes an interactive time line that traces both the life of Frederick Douglass and major historical events of that period, as well as a biographical directory of key figures who were involved in events surrounding the Emancipation Proclamation. Photographs, maps, audio clips, and historical quotes provide a vast array of background information for student research. In-depth textual summaries chronicle ethical dilemmas faced by prominent leaders during this turning point in history. The interface provides easy-to-use, intuitive, menu-driven navigation through this program about one of America's most effective and admired forces of freedom.

Approach

Frederick Douglass: Freedom's Force is presented in a 128-page illustrated book and also in an accompanying CD-ROM. Each chapter of the book begins with a time line. Glossary words appear as call-outs in the margins of the book. Pictures and illustrations from the era are referenced on the page or screen with sources and captions. Quotes from primary source documents are embedded in the text and narrated in the CD-ROM. References for the sources of quotations appear on the screen and in the teachers guide.

The CD-ROM allows students to explore relationships and make connections during the life of Frederick Douglass and the time in which he lived. Through the use of hyperlinks, students can examine related maps, visuals, time lines, audio clips, biographical sketches, music, glossary terms, and thematic essays.

Together, the book and the CD-ROM present a wealth of information and media resources to fit the learning style of every student.
