Time-Life Education produced biographical sketches for its History Makers
series, two of which were designed and developed by Redmon. This CD-ROM is
about Frederick Douglass, the abolitionist and statesman. "Freedom's
Force" delivers a content-rich, interactive, educational experience to

Description
This
CD-ROM title explores the life and accomplishments of a freed slave,
abolitionist, and statesman. It includes an interactive time line that
traces both the life of Frederick Douglass and major historical events of
that period, as well as a biographical directory of key figures who were
involved in events surrounding the Emancipation Proclamation. Photographs,
maps, audio clips, and historical quotes provide a vast array of
background information for student research. In-depth textual summaries
chronicle ethical dilemmas faced by prominent leaders during this turning
point in history. The interface provides easy-to-use, intuitive,
menu-driven navigation through this program about one of America's most
effective and admired forces of freedom.
Approach
Frederick Douglass: Freedom's Force is presented in a 128-page illustrated
book and also in an accompanying CD-ROM. Each chapter of the book begins
with a time line. Glossary words appear as call-outs in the margins of the
book. Pictures and illustrations from the era are referenced on the page
or screen with sources and captions. Quotes from primary source documents
are embedded in the text and narrated in the CD-ROM. References for the
sources of quotations appear on the screen and in the teachers guide.
The
CD-ROM allows students to explore relationships and make connections
during the life of Frederick Douglass and the time in which he lived.
Through the use of hyperlinks, students can examine related maps, visuals,
time lines, audio clips, biographical sketches, music, glossary terms, and
