During the dry season, three and a half years after her wedding,
Omie is with child! She stays close to home until her child is
born. After the summer heat has passed, Omie decides to go to
the market, but instead of carrying her new baby on her back,
she ties a sash about her waist, carrying her daughter in her

Homecoming
Burkina's father emigrated to
New York City in 1986 from Burkina Faso, formerly Upper Volta.
He left his family in Africa and worked as a cab driver to save
enough money to bring them to America.
When his daughter, Burkina, arrived in New York, her eyes grew
wide with wonder. She grew into a beautiful young woman and was
discovered by a modeling scout on her 18th birthday, and her
career prospered. One day she received a call from her agent
regarding a shoot in Burkina Faso, Africa. Her entire family
celebrated this news.
On the day of the shoot, Burkina came out of her trailer to the
cheering villagers who knew her reputation. Overcome with
emotion and filled with joy, she had come full circle and made
it home.

Traditions

Traditions
The Nubian village of Tutholo
has a long tradition of producing the finest lyre players in the
region. This tradition goes back thousands of years. Many young
boys in the village want to become musicians, but only those
with exceptional interest and talent are selected.
Girls may also play the lyre, but in traditional ceremonies only
boys and men are permitted to play the sacred songs.
Today one of the elders begins to teach Nalu his first lesson.
It is hoped that Nalu will follow in his father’s footsteps and
one day lead in the ceremonies and bring great respect to the
village.
